Ireland captain O’Mahony hints at retirement after winning Six Nations

Munster back row makes shock revelation after win over Scotland retains title

Ireland claimed the Six Nations title for the second year running after defeating Scotland, but their captain Peter O’Mahony hinted at a shock retirement following the triumph in Dublin.
The 34-year-old confirmed he is considering stepping away from international rugby after the decisive victory despite no suggestion that he would do so in the week building up to the match.
Speaking afterwards, O’Mahony said: “I don’t know, I need to go and talk to my wife and family and think about it.
“I won’t be making any decisions over the next few days. But next week we’ll have to have a chat.
“I’m still loving it. This part of it is the best feeling in the world, the part you chase.
“If it was my last one, it wasn’t a bad one to go out on. I can hang my jersey in a good place if it was.”
Andy Farrell, the Ireland head coach, added that he and O’Mahony had been speaking about when the player might step away over the last year.
“Whatever’s right for him,” Farrell said. “I’ve been a big fan of Pete for all of his career.
“We have a close enough relationship to be honest with one another and have spoken about his career and when it’s getting towards the end for the last year, we’re realists as far as that’s concerned.
“I’ve no doubt we’ll chew the fat over all that in the next few days.”
Munster stalwart O’Mahony has won over 100 caps for his country and also captained the British and Irish Lions in the opening Test of the 2017 series.
The back-rower has won five Six Nations titles after Saturday’s result, including two Grand Slams.
O’Mahony was named Ireland captain after Johnny Sexton’s retirement following last year’s World Cup campaign.
